What are loafers and how to wear them?
Loafers have been worn for more than a hundred years, and in that time these men's slip-on shoes have evolved into something men wear with everything from a suit or blazer to a pair of jeans. First made in America in the second half of the 19th century, loafers became popular for men to wear instead of boots. To this day they're worn everywhere from city streets to country clubs, on boats and yachts to the most elegant dinner gatherings, making them one of the most versatile men's shoes out there. The most famous loafers of all time are the penny loafer and tassel loafer. The contemporary loafer of today is now making a statement with its stylish lines, comfort and look of casual luxury.
What are loafers -
Loafers are slip-on shoes, with elasticized sides, that is the epitome of comfortable, casual style. Loafers are typically made from leather or suede with a rubber sole, have a low heel and a simple design that adds instant cool to any outfit when paired with pants, shorts or jeans.
Loafers vs moccasins: what's the difference?
- A loafer and a moccasin are two different kinds of shoes. In a Moccasin, the sole and sides are made from a single piece which is stitched together at the top. Loafers, on the other hand, are Flat Shoes that are constructed from several pieces without laces.
- One of the main differences between them is that Moccasins have laces and Loafers have no laces. Depending on the style, loafers can also be called open shoes, slip-ons, or slippers.
- As loafers are considered casual shoes, moccasins can easily be worn with formal attire.
Do loafers and boat shoes differ in style?
The rubber outsoles of boat shoes feature razor-cut grooves (called siping) for better traction on wet surfaces, like on a boat's deck. To avoid marking decks, the soles are usually white or a light tan color.
Usually, boat shoes are made of leather and are unlined so they can dry faster if they get wet. They often use a long leather or nylon lace that runs through a tunnel that goes all the way around the heel and then through two pairs of eyelets at the front to secure the shoe. The heel is only very slightly elevated, if at all, and is molded continuously into the outsole.
Loafers are slip-ons with no laces or ties. They can be made of any material. In general, men's loafers have either a leather or rubber sole, but more commonly a synthetic sole; the soles are usually smooth or textured, but not siped; the heel is usually an inch or less high (traditional for men's loafers). Loafers can also be perfectly flat. Loafers typically have dark soles.
